Introduce yourself in a few words…
I’m Shabnam Amirnejad, 31 years old, and I live in the Damavand region of Iran, home to the longest and highest mountain range in Iran and Central Asia. Since I was a kid, every morning when I woke up, the very first thing I saw from my bedroom window was the mountains. Here, the mountains are practically a member of our family.
Growing up with that view inspired me begin serious mountain activities at an early age like rock climbing in summer, mountaineering and ski touring during winter. Every ascent has its own story for me. In one of those stories, I realized the mountain touches the sky, and I thought to myself: flying would complete the connection to the natural beauty of mountains.
The idea of working with nature’s thermal and dynamic currents and of hopping from cloud to cloud for long distances is immensely satifying. Combining that will the freedom of just throwing a backpack with your wing on your shoulders and hiking up a mountain to takeoff, completely independently, is something truly special.
How do you practice paragliding?
I started paragliding in 2022, following the footsteps of my brother, an experienced pilot who took me under his wing. In 2024, while rooting for him in a hike and fly competition, I watched, captivated, and realized that this was my destiny. That realization lead up to my very first hike-and-fly competition with AirDesign using Susi paraglider: a light, safe, and specialized setup for people like me who love both flying and hiking. For mountaineers, one of the most important principles is to climb light; and for paragliding pilots, the most important principle is safety – luckily AirDesign delivers on both of these qualities.

My first hike-and-fly competition experience with the AirDesign kit showed me how the combination of specialized instruments and solid mountain experience becomes a formula for success, one that led me straight to first place in that race🎖. Since that day, I’ve decided to take my AirDesign hike-and-fly setup deep into the mountains and the sky.
